I had a 316-day streak on Duolingo when I gave up.
For 100+ days, I exercised at home and then nothing. And I didn’t write atomic essay 74 until today. I threw a 73-day writing streak straight out the window.
I didn’t have a clear why. That’s why.
Why was I learning Portuguese? Because I wanted to.
Why was I writing every day? Because I wanted to.
Why was I exercising every day? Because I wanted to. Just kidding. I wanted to look better. But as home exercise didn’t show any results and I missed the comfort of the gym, I gave up too.
Just wanting to do something isn’t enough. Not wanting to break a streak isn’t enough. It’s just a trick you play on yourself.
So stop that “you can miss a day but not two” BS.
Streaks don’t matter unless you know WHY you’re doing it.
So if you want a real habit, you better figure out why you want it. Then ask why again, and again.
Why do I want to write daily? Because I want to become a better writer.
Why do I want to become a better writer? Because I want to earn more money.
Why do I want to earn more money? Because I want to provide for my family and live a comfortable life.
Why do I want to provide for my family? Because I love them.
Now, that’s why you’re going to stick to your habit.
